Chapter 22

Kirtland AFB, New Mexico to a restaurant and then a ranch.

Amber and Alex turned back toward the cafeteria building. The uniformed woman waited to lead them to where the group, now one third smaller, would spend the night.

"Lots to do," Dr. Rebecca said.

Corbo and Livia stood beside the building. On the outside, looking in.

"Corbo, Livia, do you wish you could go home?" Amber asked.

"No," Livia said. "I won't leave Corbo, and he has to stay with Dr. Rebecca."

Corbo took Livia's hand and walked behind their guide, almost passing her.

"They've been too quiet. I hope they're okay." Dr. Rebecca tightened her grip on papers trying to flutter away. "Today has been a shock to them."

The trailer their guide led them to was similar to the one they had left behind. The guide opened the door. "There isn't much sleeping room. A couple of computers have been set up. More accommodations may be made available tomorrow, depending on your plans."

Dr. Rebecca nodded. "That's okay. We are down to six people now. We should be fine. Who knows what Mother Nature has in store for us tonight."

Corbo and Livia went in ahead of Amber and Alex. They walked down the short hallway and went into one of the little rooms.

"Give them a few minutes. They need some time alone. Time to turn on the computers, and search for what updates we can." Dr. Rebecca said.

Amber sighed. For some reason, she didn’t want to work. Before, fieldwork had been exciting, to study things from long ago, and think of how they had affected the present, and potentially the future. Now, she was in the middle of events as they happened, and it wasn't fun. It was scary.

She flipped through the screens. Low murmuring interrupted the data in front of her. The numbers and streams blurred before her eyes. No one else paid any attention, so she slipped out of her seat to follow the sound.

In one small bedroom, Livia leaned up against Corbo, and spoke softly.

Amber walked into the room trying not to disturb them.

"You are almost a brother, since my mom loved your dad."

"Hush, Livia. I was never your brother, and that's not what you, or I, want. That's why we get along so well. Even our parents trusted each other." Corbo hugged her.

"My dad may hate you even more now."

Corbo's lips brushed the top of Livia's head. "If he does, it's his loss."

She looked up to him. "He will see you as his rival for mom." Tears flowed down her cheeks.

His arms squeezed her tight, and he kissed her lips. "Livia, it's okay. We will be fine. If that's what you want. He will see me as a rival for your attention, no one else's. If he does, he has bigger problems than we can fix." He kissed her as she snuggled closer to him.

Amber waited, barely breathing. A side of Corbo unseen before. And Livia showing her vulnerability was unexpected.

Livia pulled back.

"Corbo, do you want to find the woman who raised you, who isn't your mom?"

Corbo looked up at Amber in the doorway.
